Projects and ideas
Even a narrow balcony can become a favourite spot at home once you decide what you want it for. For some it is breakfast in the fresh air, for others a bed of herbs or a quiet corner to work in. We have gathered the ideas people usually start with and noted for each what to think about in advance, so that comfort does not clash with safety and the building's rules.
One clear idea beats five half-hearted ones. A balcony where laundry dries, tomatoes grow and a bike is parked all at once is rarely cosy.

How this section works: we describe scenarios in general terms, without brands, models or dimensions. If an idea involves work on heating, wiring or glazing, first find out what needs approval and call in a professional.
Ideas for a balcony or loggia
Six scenarios that flat owners choose most often.
Summer dining spot
A folding table, a couple of light chairs and a box of herbs, and breakfast moves outdoors. Leave barbecues, braziers and candles off the balcony: an open flame next to the facade and the neighbours is dangerous. Do not push furniture right up against the railing.
Greens, flowers and herbs do well on a balcony if you match them to the light. Boxes are fixed securely and only on the inside of the railing, with a tray under each one so that water does not run onto the balcony below.
An insulated loggia can become a small office with a view. A comfortable chair, a narrow desk and good light matter more than the finish. If you need a socket or a light fitting, the wiring is done only by an electrician, not by the owner following a video.
A closed cabinet along a solid wall holds seasonal items without turning the balcony into a warehouse. Keep here only what you really use, and never put cabinets over the emergency hatch or in front of the ladder between balconies.
If children can get onto the balcony, move anything they could stand on away from the railing and fit window opening restrictors and locks that a child cannot open alone. The main rule is simple: a young child is never left on a balcony without an adult.
An armchair or a narrow bench, a throw, a couple of cushions and soft lighting turn the balcony into a place you want to step out to in the evening. Choose fabrics that are easy to remove and dry, and do not block the way to the door.
Useful things for cleaning and small jobs on the balcony, no brands: a stepladder, a spirit level, gloves, a brush, a watering can with trays, window restrictors.
